In a short amount of time working with Sonicwalls, I discovered quite a few issues. I do not recommend Sonicwall as a result. Perhaps the CONS below won't affect you, but at least be aware of them.

PROS:
Small form factor for UTM

CONS:
Horrible customer service (outsourced to India, unless you are certified)
Long wait for customer service
Dynamic DNS client bug that has yet to be resolved (see below)
No DNS proxy intelligence for Split-Brain/Split horizon setup
Very weak DHCP server options, only basics
Poor documentation

Customer Service: First off, understand that level 1 is outsourced to India. I tried opening an incident via their web interface, and after several days without progress, I decided to call. The customer service number I dialed put me on hold right after selecting Tech Support. At some point (30 minutes later) an individual answered, and collected my details, and put me back on hold. About an hour later, the system forced me to leave a message and hung-up. I tried this several times, until I finally did get through to tech support. Now the first person that answers the phone and collects details (to help route the call), fails (or they lack the mechanism) to notify the final tech-support person, so you must repeat the details of your case (I mean seriously, is it terribly difficult to relay such details?). The VOICE quality(of the call) is terrible, I imagine they are using VOIP to backhaul calls to India, and using high compression, bandwidth saving techniques which result in low quality (I specialize in VOIP, and I know what they do to save money). This makes life rather difficult when already dealing with heavily accented/overly polite tech support in India.

The Dynamic DNS bug is quite simple. If you are getting the Enhanced O/S with the hopes of using dual ISP links (active/passive) and plan to use Dynamic DNS to maintain a simple hostname to dynamic ip mapping, you are out of luck. Dynamic DNS client on the Sonicwall is BOUND to the Primary WAN interface (how stupid is that?).

They don't support Split Brain (aka Split horizon) DNS, in fact their DNS capabilities are non-existent. The other major players in this field support this, why not Sonicwall?

DHCP - Where to begin? Its featureless, as weak as you can get it. It supports (options) DNS, WINS, Gateway, and a "callmanager" option. Thats it.

Poor documentation: I was trying to tunnel all my VPN traffic (both inbound to lan, and internet). Getting this done was difficult, because of non-existent documentation on the subject. You need to add some special NAT rules to support this, but NOWHERE is this indicated.

I tried communicating my disappointments to my Sonicwall sales rep, but it seems he can't "do anything about it". Sonicwall does not listen to customers (or at least in my size of business) - simply out of touch. I strongly recommend you consider another vendor (perhaps one of the top 2), as Sonicwall is out of touch with customers, and have a weak offering overall.

This battery is very good. It lasts for around 4hrs n 15mins i believe (Whenever i'm using my laptop i always dim my screen a little so if you keep your screen FULLY BRIGHT all the time when running on battery then it may only last around 3hrs n bout 30mins for you which is still pretty good). I definitely know that it lasts for more little more than 4hrs though.

The first thing i did when i got it was charge it fully BEFORE TURNING ON MY LAPTOP. After it was charged fully i turned on my laptop n used it as regular.

Worked great for about 2 years then it stopped. It just powers up- then shuts off like a short out or something. Nothing on this infinite loop restart on the Leviton troubleshooting guides. I installed this as part of a complete Leviton Structured Media Center. I decided to replace this with an Apple Airport Extreme. I wish Leviton made a gigabit ethernet anything. Until they do- might be better to go with someone else.

Verizon DSL Gateway

The modem has been up and running well now for a couple of months, which is the good news. But when we first got it, we couldn't get it to work, because the on-line set up wouldn't run. That turned out to be just the tip of the iceberg. To be honest, I use Verizon only because it's the only service in our town. In fact, some of the V techies I've talked to have called it a bad system. Here's the whole story: It took about a month to start service after ordering because they sent us the wrong modem. When we received the correct modem, things were ok until we returned the original modem. At that point the service was inexplicably interrupted. Working through the automated phone system to find out why, the final message I received was "We are unable to help you with this matter. Either choose the main menu, or hang up." With much persistence I finally contacted a techie who said that we had asked to cancel the service. I told him no, we did not, so could he please reinstate it? He replied that it would take another 5 working days to complete the cancellation process, then we could request a new setup from the sales department. We spent hours on the phone trying to track down someone knowledgeable. In the end, someone finally said that returning the original modem evidently "triggered" the cancellation process, and once begun, nothing could be done to stop it. In addition, it would take another 2-3 weeks following the cancellation before we could request new service. I pointed out that this was all due to a Verizon mistake, but it made no difference. The best they could do was to provide us free dial-up service in the meantime. So after a month of dialup, we finally had DSL reinstated; however, we could not get an internet connection. A couple of techs tried to help, but no luck. Then they sent us another modem, still no luck. Eventually it was discovered that the problem was with the Verizon system itself, and it was repaired. However, we soon got a nasty letter reminding us that if we did not return the extra modem soon, they would charge us for it. We returned it within the required period, but were billed for it anyway ($90). We are still trying to resolve that issue, which is tough, because the Verizon department in charge doesn't answer the phone after business hours or on weekends, and you have to be prepared to camp out on the phone. To be fair, my sister lives down the road from us and they have never had a problem with Verizon DSL (their system worked fine from the beginning). On the other hand, their Verizon phone service went out a couple of weeks ago, and V techs have failed to show twice for appointments to fix it. So the bottom line is, don't buy Verizon unless you can fix it yourself.

So far this device seems to work perfect and without any malfunction. It took me less then 5 minutes to setup and I am already using it. I have done multiple tests and no one can tell I am using my home phone through the bluetooth to my cellphone. I have had the Xlink BTTN and the Cell2Tel and the Cell2Tell seems to work better where I have heard from the people I speak to over the phone that the call quality is better with the Cell2Tel. I also called Grace Digital and was told the Cell2Tel is the newer version of the Xlink. The Cell2Tel also has the phone ports clearly marked for knowing which is the Line In and which is the Line out. I can not complain about this product and thus far would highly recommend it. If anything changes I will be sure to update this review.

Pioneer ND-G500 4-Channel Gateway Audio Integration Amplifier for AVIC-F500BT

What a concept! Have your "portable" GPS unit function like an in-dash GPS, who wouldn't want that?

That's what this box promises and delivers, although the install can be rather involved. My car doesn't have space for a double-DIN unit, so I opted for the AVIC-F500BT and the ND-G500. I also got the iPod cable and external microphone CD-VM1.

Went with a professional install - the original estimate was 2 hours of labor but it ended up being more like 4 hours. The end results are worth it - I can play radio/cds through my regular stereo but when using Nav or bluetooth calls, the audio is muted and audio from the AVIC-F500BT is cut in. Of course, playing music from the F500BT will also cut out your stereo audio.

When parking my vehicle, I remove the F500BT from its mount and hide away the cables and it looks normal (without navigation).

The unit is certainly convenient to use, and pairing is rather straighforward. Range is about 30 ft in my (not very exhaustive) test. BUT: The big issue is sound quality! It brings you back to the time of tapes (muffled sound, missing highs, loss of airiness and vigor) and scratched vinyl records (hiss, and most annoyingly, regular pronounced cracks and pops that sound like bad scratches on the record).

A direct A/B comparison of the source CDs (Classical) and 320kbps mp3 rips made from them shows the expected noticeable slight degradation when used with a cable; but when played through this unit, it leads to what I consider unacceptable loss of fidelity, clarity and presence. Why even bother about the digital age when this sounds like a low-to-midrange 60s and 70s setup?

I have owned this laptop for three days now and so far it is living up to my expectations. I was looking for a solid system with the Core 2 Dual and 4g of memory so that it would be able to run Vista 64 which I have heard is more stable than Vista 32. I also wanted a sizeable hard drive and at 320g you can't get much bigger. For $500 brand new this model was too good to be true. The sales woman at Compusa couldn't explain to me why this was cheaper than other laptops with less under the hood. I normally buy online, but this deal was too good to pass up.

It's small, with a 14 inch screen it fits very easily into my backpack and I hardly know it's there because it weighs next to nothing. The screen is bright and vivid. The full sized keyboard is very responsive and easy to type on. The speakers are pretty impressive for a unit this size. I can watch movies without having to lean into my screen to hear them. The mouse pad is normal, although I prefer the up/down button scroll to the ruler pad slide on the side. It has three usb ports, an HDMI port, card reader, VGA output and the standard headphone and mic jack. I would love to see companies replace the vga output with some standard RCA outs. It would make life so much simpler when connecting your computer to a TV.

The unit is pretty fast and stable. I have already installed a ton of software on it and it doesn't seem to have any problems when multi-tasking or loading. The DVD burner is great. It takes me about 45 minutes to burn a full leangth DVD. The tray can take one or two tries to push back in, but it's not a big deal. It doesn't put out a great amount of heat. I feel comfortable leaving it on my lap for an hour.

I like the subtle silver and black design with all blue lights. The hot buttons above the keyboard for quick DVD and windows media launch blend into the unit well. I have had quick launch buttons on other laptops and never use them. There is a great volume control next to the hot buttons that is very responsive to slight finger taps. The whole design is simple and sleek.

I havn't tested the battery life yet, but it was advertised as having a three hour life span. Seems reasonable. I had it unplugged for a bunch of printing and the battery indicator never dropped below full. It is very quich to shut off the screen when on battery power, which is great for conserving energy.

With it's small size and high power performance, net book users may want to consider this over an underpowered net unit.

For the price, I think this is probabaly the best deal on the market. It is my third Gateway laptop and I hope it lasts as long as the other two which each held up very well for about five years. I have no buyers remorse and will update if I discover any faults.
